Carson's Update

Today Carson had his evaluation with the speech therapist and early childhood specialist. I was glad that Carson warmed up to them right away. They asked him to do simple tasks and point to things, stack blocks etc. He did everything I knew he could, and didn't do the things I knew he was behind on - the pronunciation of things and saying the whole words. So when they were done the therapists went over their results. Carson's actual age is 25 months Receptive Language (understanding) 28 months Expressive Language (talking) 17 months Total Language score 23 months So exactly what we thought, he is ahead in his understanding and thinking but just can't express the words. One specialist asked about goals and frustrations we want to see get fixed/achieved in the next 6 months. I said obviously to see his speech grow. But I don't have any frustrations with him.... then while we were talking Carson came running in the living room all excited about something and was pointing for me to look and saying "mom"... and it hit me my frustration is that he is SOOO excited but just doesn't have the words to tell me exactly what he is excited about. It sucks when he is so excited about things and I say "what buddy?" and he just looks at me all happy and points but doesn't know what to say. So I am praying that this speech therapy will help him grow and catch up in his speech. No mom wants to see their baby frustrated knowing what he wants to say but not knowing how to say it. Our plan is 12 speech visits in the first 6 months and see where we are at. We get to decide how often and when the visits are. We can do once a week and then slow down at the end or just start every other week and asses how it is working. I am going to follow Carson's lead. He was so excited when the women would ask a question and he could point to what they were talking about. He loves getting the praise when he is right :) I am so thankful for a program we are able to use and at no cost to us! So we will continue to pray that Carson continues to grow in his learning and he picks things up quickly and easily.
